Rep. Borton votes to establish Northern Michigan veterans cemetery

State Rep. Ken Borton and the Michigan House of Representatives today approved a plan to open a new cemetery for veterans in Northern Michigan.

The proposed state veterans cemetery in Crawford County would fill a critical need. Currently, two federal veterans cemeteries in Michigan are open for new interments, both located in the southern part of the state — one near Battle Creek and the other in Holly.

“After answering the call of duty and dedicating their lives to our country, Northern Michigan veterans deserve to have a fitting final resting place available for them,” said Borton, R-Gaylord. “Establishing a dedicated veterans cemetery in our region will help us honor the men and women from Up North who served in our armed forces.”

Senate Bill 971 now returns to the Senate for concurrence.

A million dollars is a lifechanging amount of money in Northern Michigan, yet the MLCC viewed it as so unimportant they couldn’t even be bothered to report their losses to the public.”

“Michigan residents should not have to undergo lengthy legal battles to regain control of property they legally own and pay taxes on,” said Borton, R-Gaylord. “If someone enters a property illegally, they are a criminal. It shouldn’t matter whether someone trespasses for twenty minutes or three months. Trespassing is a crime, and it should be as simple as that.”

“This proposed crippling of the OAG is a perfect example of the misguided leadership we’ve experienced under Gov. Whitmer,” said Borton, R-Gaylord. “Normal people in normal professions have to fix problems when auditors bring them to light. Clearly, the governor believes she’s above normal people. No working-class person can threaten to defund their company if they receive a bad performance review.”
